A Critical Examination Of The Inter Relationship Between...
A critical examination of the inter-relationship between ethnicity and nationalism in Eritrea Introduction The notions of ethnicity and nationalism have been used to discuss the formation of what is so called a nation-state. Many anthropologists (e.g. Eriksen, 1993) assert that ethnicity is a multifaceted product of ever-changing social relations and organisation. In a similar way, Eriksen (1993) discusses nationalism as a social cohesion defined by its relationship to the state. Echoing further dichotomy to the anthropologistsââ¬â¢ interpretation, Brubaker (2004) also affirms the presence of ââ¬Å"normative ambivalence and conceptual ambiguityâ⬠in the study of ethnicity and nationalism. What such debates suggest is therefore neither the definitions nor the relationship between ethnicity and nationalism has been straightforward. From an anthropological point of view, loyal individuals who share symbols, history and found a common expression among themselves claim an imagined concept of civic nationhood (Eriksen, 1993). On the other hand, a different form of nationalism can be tr aced from ââ¬Å"vertical relationshipâ⬠between ethnicities competing for power (ibid.). Nonetheless, nationalism exists as an abstract conception that involves ââ¬Ëexclusionââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëinclusionââ¬â¢ of inevitably changing identities (Eriksen, 1993; Smith, 1994 and Brubaker, 2004). Despite the above controversies, anthropological analyses of ethnicity and nationalism play a crucial role in mediating the differentShow MoreRelatedFor the Nation to Live the Tribe Must Die2511 Words à |à 11 Pagescase that the contempt it breeds is a hindrance to the growth of nationalism and its love child the unified nation. Grades And The Esteem, By Randy Moore - 1117 Words
ââ¬Å"Grades and Self- Esteemâ⬠What is self- esteem? Self- esteem is confidence in oneââ¬â¢s own worth or abilities. In ââ¬Å"Grades Self- Esteemâ⬠, author Randy Moore (2007) stated that the level of performance of the students decreased while schools are building the self- esteem in the students. Author Alfie Kohn (1994) stated in his article ââ¬Å"The Truth about Self- Esteemâ⬠to contradict Mooreââ¬â¢s opinion that academics and self- esteem are not related. Moore discussed some beneficial points which are useful for the students, but in some cases his argument was not giving better meaning. I agree from Mooreââ¬â¢s article that the American students do not perform as well academically as students from other countries. I do not agree from Mooreââ¬â¢s opinion that theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Giving tough exams and more reading, and setting high standards to award grades will not allow the teachers to understand the intellectual depth of the students and increase the value of the cl asses. Some people argue that students will perform better if it is difficult to get grades. There were evidence that harder multiple choice exams will not allow the students to improve understanding and thinking ability. The harder exams will yield only short term benefit to the student, but in the long run, tougher grades wonââ¬â¢t benefit the students. Teachers who are giving easy grades to the students are worried about the studentsââ¬â¢ self-esteem and the elevation. Kohn (2002) stated that many higher education teachers are basically researchers, they are not trained enough to teach, it is better to analyze the teachers skill and examine their view of teaching in order to get better performance of the students. This will allow the students to get benefit without facing a hard grading system. Moore (2007) stated that nowadays teachers are offering only A or B grades to the students. According to Moore (2007) in 1966, teachers gave Cââ¬â¢s as Aââ¬â¢s and by 1978, compared to Cââ¬â¢s, Aââ¬â¢s were increased. In the 1980ââ¬â¢s, most of the schools were giving ââ¬ËAââ¬â¢ grades to the students. Many researchers stated that there is no proper evidence for grade inflation. Jeffrey Santos Essays (1232 words) - Literature, Comics, Raw
Jeffrey Santos Professor Shrivastava Experiencing Literature 10/15/17 The Complete Maus Essay Prompt In English class we read a book called "The Complete Maus" by Art Spiegelman. I have been given an assignment that is based off of Spiegelman's use of the famous comic strip. He uses the comic in many different ways but with one main way being, to help the reader fully engage into his thoughts. The Washington Post stated that what Spielgelman did was "impossible to achieve in any medium but comics." Comic strips help the reader dice into the small but important details of the story by giving them interesting drawings that spark their attention. Comics also come with words to give the reader more of an easy understanding of what he or she is reading. This being said, my goal of this paper is to prove the Washington Post in a positive way and to help their statement be correct. To help explain my stand on this, in my first paragraph I will talk about Spielgelman's representation and reliability of his story. Since he relies on his father's thoughts, some may think that the reliability of the drawings may not be valid enough to fully believe. In the second paragraph I will discuss the multiple time frames and how he shifts from one time frame to another but also has multiple present things within one time frame. And in my final paragraph I will discuss the shifts of point of view and how he runs two parallel points of views and still achieves his goal in the story. Representation and reliability is something all if not most people worried about with Spiegelman's comic strip. The main difference in Spiegelman's representation of memory vs other authors is his use of drawings and intriguing images. Even though he relies on his father's thoughts and memories, he also uses real images to help us understand and solidify his father's memories to be true. On page (75) in Spielgelman's book he draws his father's family sitting around a dinner table discussing the hardships of the time that they were living in, and shortly after that there is an image of his son dumping his food onto the table. Clearly his father and his family are very self-giving and protective of everyone still breathing. Although Artie and his father had a rough relationship in the beginning, the comic helps us understand that by the second comic story, Art and his father become close again and begin to understand each other like they used to. With the two of them bonding through hi s father's memory filled talk, it helps us believe that Artie actually helped us readers understand his father's memories and a more diverse and interesting way. He represents his father to his best ability and helps us readers understand fully. He uses his representation within the comic extremely well and it would be hard to tackle all of these things in a written novel. When writing a comic strip you must pay attention to your use in change of time frames and Spiegelman does that and then some. The reader moves through several different historical positions throughout the whole story. They also move through narrative events such as pre Holocaust, the Holocaust, and the post Holocaust, but also, within one time frame there can be multiple times present and co-resent. Maus intertwines the past and the present extremely well to the point where they are simply parallel to each other. He combines the different subject histories of each protagonist, and the different Nazi views located in Rego Park, New York. Artie manages to add many small narratives within the bigger pictures throughout the story. For example, Arties struggles to understand his family's origins and himself as well. Although Artie was talking about the Holocaust through the whole story, he uses small examples to show his struggles in the story as well. Artie asks Vladek for Antje's diaries and Vladek then tells him that the diaries are gone. The interesting part of this story is that Artie then remembers that he burned them himself and this memory puts him into a deep depression. The way Artie showed us his depression through the comics really showed how hurt he

Death Penalty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3
Death Penalty - Essay Example Examining the use of the death penalty, historical attributes and the different viewpoints shows that there are controversies that allow the penalty to continue to be practiced within society. The concept of the death penalty is one which continues to remain questionable, specifically because of the moral implications which are associated with this. Despite the debates, the penalty continues to be practiced within this time frame. The problem which is now arising is based on the intent of murder as well as the question of whether a life should be taken from an individual. The several debates show that there isnââ¬â¢t a way to justify the death penalty and the reason to kill an individual because of the crimes committed. The questions that arise from the debates as well as the problems which are continuing to arise with the circumstances within the death penalty are some of the many reasons that the death penalty is one which canââ¬â¢t be attributed or practiced in society. The death penalty first began in the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries when colonialism was still functioning as the main structure in society. The most common reasons for the death penalty ranged from treason to murder, burglary, counterfeiting or arson. The American colonies justified this because of the smaller communities which were trying to build and the several problems which arose when the communities were hindered by the difficulties which arose. The punishment system was also not in place, making the death penalty a reasonable option to stop the crimes in the community and to ensure that there were controls on those who committed crimes within the region. It was also known that the political and religious traditions were developing in a more conservative manner, which led to little debate over the death penalty and the approaches which many took when looking at the purpose used for this type of punishment. It wasnââ¬â¢t until the development of the United States at later time frames and in relation to the growth of prison systems that the alterations were made within the system (Banner, 2003). The death penalty is currently practiced by 34 states and is prohibited by 16 states. Out of these states, there were 1260 executions which were performed between the years of 1976 to 2011. It is noted that there are racial differences with those who are tried with the decision to face the death penalty with 56% being white, 7% Hispanic, 35% black and 2% other. It was also noted that there were frequent patterns between the race and the death penalty with the race of the victim and the race of the defendant making a difference in the number of executions which were performed by each state. Other demographics which are associated with this are inclusive of juveniles, which include 22 youth that have faced the death penalty, as well as several which have faced the death penalty while being diagnosed with mental illness. It has also been found that an av erage of 130 individuals was released from prison since 1973. They were tried for the death penalty and were later found as innocent (Death Penalty Info, 2011). The complexity with the death penalty first comes from the other facts that are based on the penalty and its effectiveness. The penalty was first used as a control for prisoners and as a way to stop individuals from causing complexities
